What is the difference between tree trimming and pruning?

Tree trimming removes overgrown or hazardous branches to improve shape and safety, while tree pruning uses selective, natural cuts to enhance long-term health, vigor, and beauty—never topping or damaging the tree. At O’Brien Tree Care, Jen O’Brien personally educates every customer on the proper techniques so your trees thrive for years. Our woman-owned family business delivers expert, caring results every time.

When is the best time to prune or trim trees?

Most trees can be pruned safely year-round, but late winter or early spring is ideal for many species to promote strong growth. We provide personalized recommendations tailored to your specific trees and property during our free on-site estimate in Bucks or Montgomery County. This attentive, expert guidance reflects Jen O’Brien’s personal commitment to every customer’s trees and property.

How much does tree removal cost in Bucks or Montgomery County?

Pricing is based on tree size, location, access, and condition, with clear, honest, transparent upfront quotes and no hidden fees. You always know exactly what you’ll pay—fair and competitive every time. As a local, woman-owned business, we believe pricing should always be honest and transparent — no surprises, just fair value on every job.

Do you offer stump grinding after tree removal?

Yes, we grind stumps below grade, rake the mulch back into the hole, and leave your yard neat and clean. Stump removal is available for an additional fee if you prefer a fully cleared space. This meticulous cleanup is just part of how we do things at O’Brien Tree Care.

Do you take the mulch produced from stump grinding?

At O’Brien Tree Care, we take pride in leaving your property neat and undisturbed after every job. By default, we grind the stump below grade, then carefully rake all the resulting mulch back into the hole and clean up the surrounding area so your yard looks tidy and restored. If you prefer us to remove and haul away the grindings completely, we are happy to provide that additional service for a small extra fee beyond the standard stump grinding cost.

Will tree removal, trimming, or pruning damage my property?

No—your property is always treated as our own. Our professional crew uses careful, safe methods and cleans up completely so your yard looks exactly as we found it. This level of respect and precision reflects Jen O’Brien’s leadership and our 45-year family legacy.

Can I keep the wood from the trees you take down?

Yes, of course! At O’Brien Tree Care, we are happy to let you keep the wood from the trees we remove. Upon your request, we will cut the larger logs into approximately 18-inch lengths and neatly stack them where the tree was felled for your convenience. Smaller branches and other sections of the tree will be processed through our chipper, as they take too long to clean and cut by hand and are typically not suitable for firewood or the same purposes as the main logs.

My landscaper wants to "top" some of my trees, is that a good idea?

No, topping trees is not a good idea and we strongly recommend against it. Topping involves cutting major branches back to random stubs or small lateral branches instead of making proper, clean cuts to a main branch or trunk. This damaging practice often leads to decaying stubs, sunburn on exposed areas, rapid growth of weak water sprouts, increased tree stress, and the need for more frequent pruning later on. At O’Brien Tree Care, Jen O’Brien and our experienced team always use professional, selective pruning techniques that protect your trees’ natural structure and long-term health. As a woman-owned family business with over 45 years of local expertise, we focus on doing the job the right way so your trees stay strong, beautiful, and safe for years to come.

Do you plant new or replacement shrubs or trees?

No, we do not sell or plant new trees or shrubs. We specialize in tree trimming, pruning, and land clearing, and recommend you use someone who specializes in planting and growing if that is your goal. We are happy to direct you to a landscaper we recommend if that is a need of your job!

Does a tree company need special insurance beyond general landscaping coverage?

Yes — and this is one of the most important questions a homeowner can ask before hiring anyone to work on their trees. General landscaping insurance does not cover tree removal or aerial work. It’s a completely different risk category, and if a company only carries landscaping coverage, their policy may deny any claim that arises from tree work — leaving you liable as the property owner.

There are two specific types of coverage to verify before work begins:

  • General liability written for tree work (not just landscaping) — covers damage to your property, your neighbor’s property, or any structures during the job.
  • Workers’ compensation — covers crew members if they are injured on your property. Without it, an injured worker can file a claim against your homeowner’s insurance, or in some cases pursue you personally.

Always ask for a certificate of insurance before any work starts, and confirm it explicitly covers tree removal and aerial operations. O’Brien Tree Care carries full tree service liability insurance and workers’ compensation on every job — we provide our certificate upfront, no questions asked.

Can’t my landscaper just handle tree work?

Landscaping and tree care are very different trades with different training, equipment, and insurance requirements. Most landscapers are skilled at mowing, planting, and grounds maintenance — but tree removal, climbing, and anything involving a saw near your home or structures requires specialized expertise that general landscaping does not cover.

When a landscaper takes on tree work without the proper credentials, several things can go wrong for you as the homeowner:

  • Insurance gap: As noted above, their landscaping policy likely won’t cover tree work injuries or property damage — leaving you exposed.
  • Improper cuts: Without tree-specific training, landscapers often make cuts that damage long-term tree health — topping, flush cuts, and poor pruning angles that invite disease and decay.
  • No rigging knowledge: Safely lowering heavy limbs near your home, fence, or power lines requires proper rigging equipment and technique. Without it, the risk of property damage is significant.
  • No workers’ comp: If a landscaper’s employee is hurt on your property doing tree work, the liability exposure to you is real.

For low-level hedge trimming well away from structures, your landscaper may be fine. For anything involving a chainsaw, climbing, or tree removal, always hire a dedicated tree service with proper insurance, training, and equipment.
